This is how to end an AI chat with a reusable brief.

A long chat can contain a good decision, three abandoned directions, an old budget, and a current next action. Copying the whole conversation carries all of that noise into the next session. A reusable brief preserves the work without preserving the scroll.

Close with four parts

Imagine a harmless chat used to plan a community-book-club season. The conversation explored several formats and eventually chose three monthly meetings with rotating hosts. Before closing, ask the chat to compress only what survived.

The closing prompt:

Turn this book-club planning chat into a reusable brief with exactly four sections:

Goal: one sentence describing what we are trying to make.
Decisions: only choices we explicitly made, each with its reason.
Open questions: facts or choices still unresolved, with the person or source that can settle each one.
Next action: the smallest concrete action, its owner, and what completion looks like.

Exclude abandoned ideas, repeated discussion, private details, and anything you inferred but we did not decide. Mark current outside facts as needing verification. Keep the complete brief under 250 words.

Audit before you carry it forward

Read every decision and ask, “Did we actually choose this?” Remove anything the chat promoted from suggestion to fact. Check that an open question has a path to resolution, and that the next action belongs to a real person rather than “the team.”

The brief should be useful on its own. You can paste it into a clean chat, put it in your project notes, or hand it to another person without asking them to reconstruct fifty turns.

Leave sensitive work behind

Do not use this technique to transport private messages, medical details, financial records, confidential work, or other sensitive material between services. For those situations, create a blank brief structure and complete it offline in the protected place where the information already belongs.

A good chat ends with a smaller artifact than the conversation and a clearer future than the first prompt.
