The dangerous part of buying electronics is not that you know nothing. It is that you know just enough to be overwhelmed. Three laptop tabs are open. One has more memory, one has a brighter screen, one has a processor name that sounds like it was designed to make you give up. Every review says "great for most people," and you are trying to decide whether the extra $220 buys anything you will notice after the first week.
AI is useful here because it can turn spec fog into tradeoffs. Not "which one is best?" Best for whom? The move is to give it your real use, your budget, the product details you are comparing, and the things you refuse to tolerate.
The move
Before you ask, copy the product names, prices, return windows, warranty terms, and the specs you can see. If you are choosing between phones, include your carrier and the features you actually use. If it is a TV, include the room, viewing distance, and what you watch. If it is a laptop, include the apps that make your current machine groan.
The comparison prompt:
I’m choosing between these three laptops for my daughter’s first year of college.
Budget: $900 before tax. She will use Google Docs, Zoom, 30 browser tabs, Canva, light video editing for class projects, and occasional Minecraft. She hates fan noise, will carry it across campus, and I want it to last four years if possible.
Option A: $749, 13-inch, 8GB memory, 256GB storage, 2.7 lb, 18-hour battery claim, no fan, one USB-C port.
Option B: $899, 14-inch, 16GB memory, 512GB storage, 3.3 lb, 12-hour battery claim, two USB-C ports and HDMI.
Option C: $829, 15-inch, 16GB memory, 256GB storage, 4.1 lb, 10-hour battery claim, cheaper plastic body, full keyboard.
Compare them for our situation. Do not pick a winner yet. First show the tradeoffs that matter after the first week: longevity, repair risk, ports and dongles, storage pressure, carrying weight, noise, and what we would probably regret.

What to look for
A useful answer does not crown a winner immediately. It separates the decision into friction points. The 8GB machine is cheapest, but memory and a single port may become long-term constraints. The 15-inch machine offers more screen for the price, but weight matters for a student carrying it daily. The 14-inch model uses the full budget, while its memory, storage, and ports may reduce accessory pressure. Those are tradeoffs to verify against the exact current models.
That is the difference between comparison shopping and spec shopping. Spec shopping asks which number is bigger. Comparison shopping asks which compromise you will still like in six months.

That second pass is where AI earns its keep. It may remind you to verify upgradeability, return windows, education discounts, whether a charger is included, or whether the warranty covers the battery. It can also make the cheaper choice respectable instead of treating "more expensive" as automatically smarter.
Where AI is useful, and where it is not
Use AI for structure: what matters, what you are overvaluing, what you are ignoring, and which questions to ask the seller. Do not use it as a live price oracle. Prices, stock, coupon terms, model numbers, and return policies change constantly, so confirm anything money depends on with the retailer or manufacturer before checkout. If a warranty or financing plan is involved, read the actual terms.
The privacy limit is small but real: do not paste order numbers, account pages, addresses, or payment screenshots. Product pages and public specs are enough.
This makes you the person who buys the thing that fits, not the thing with the loudest number on the box.
