This is how to use AI to read a chart before trusting the claim.

A line can look as if it doubled because the vertical axis begins at 92 instead of zero. Two bars can look comparable while one reports percentages and the other counts. The picture gets attention before the reader has met the denominator.

Provide the public chart and its citation or a precise transcription. Ask AI to describe structure before interpreting the trend. Require every conclusion to name the visual feature and source fact it depends on.

The chart-reading prompt:

Analyze this fictional public chart description. The title says “Ridership surged after shelters were installed.” The vertical axis runs from 90 to 110 riders per weekday. The two bars are 96 before and 104 after. The caption says ten stops received shelters, but gives no comparison stops or timeframe.

Separate visible chart facts, arithmetic, the caption’s claim, plausible interpretations, and missing context. Show the percentage change and do not infer causation.

Swap in a public chart and its source. The structure-arithmetic-claim separation is the part that matters.

Read the denominator before the story

A useful answer should calculate the change, notice the narrow baseline, and explain that visual drama and numerical size are different questions. It should also name the missing comparison, timeframe, and method without inventing them.

  • Structure: Read title, axes, scale, baseline, units, legend, labels, and source before interpreting shape.
  • Calculate: Reproduce the change with visible arithmetic and the correct denominator.
  • Bound the claim: Separate association, comparison, and causation according to what the source actually supports.

Leave the screenshot and open the source

Inspect the complete report, methodology, sample, timeframe, definitions, uncertainty, and underlying data when available. A chart cropped from its source may omit the very fact that changes its meaning.

AI can slow the eye down long enough for the chart’s grammar to become visible. Evidence still lives in the complete source.
